The fifth edition of Less Is More (LIM), the European development programme for limited feature films, has announced its selection, which consists of 16 script projects and 12 Development angels. Despite these troubling times, a total of 350 applicants from more than 70 countries, including a handful of new ones from around the world, applied. LIM is a training and coaching programme dedicated to script development for first, second or third feature-film projects. Driven by Le Groupe Ouest's methodological approach and involving a very intense, eight-month-long process, LIM's philosophy is built around the idea that the introduction of self-imposed limitations early on in the writing process can lead to accelerated creativity for filmmakers.

Regarding the hard times that everyone is going through at the moment and the struggles of the writers, Massimiliano Nardulli, LIM’s head of talent, underlined: “With the context being so heavily troubled, we were afraid that the writers would be affected in the way they project themselves with new projects. But it’s not the case. LIM's goal, today more than ever, is to highlight projects with a quest for human substance in a disturbed landscape, projects powered by a strong quest for meaning. And it seems as though the 16 projects selected this year, first as well as second feature films, constitute a very consistent display of how a new generation of filmmakers is grabbing the world with eager hands.”

In a similar vein, Antoine Le Bos, LIM’s artistic director, mentioned: “It’s as if this context of so many lockdowns has also created a kind of wake-up call. During last year’s workshops, some of the projects had to gather new momentum; they couldn’t keep on talking about our world in the same manner. Very clearly, today, you can’t write films while thinking that the world revolves around you. You have to talk to humans, all trapped in the same boat. It has become urgent!”

As for the selection, it is dominated by women filmmakers, who are coming along with ten out of the 16 projects, and four new countries are joining for the first time: the Czech Republic, South Africa, Uganda and Vietnam. The range of cinematographic styles is also broader at LIM 2021, as people who have a strong background in visual arts, documentary or even theatre are joining in this time. Giving a glimpse of the variety in terms of styles, the stories include love triangles, baroque eroticism and troubled bodies, while others take us to meet the Sámi in Norway, transport us to the heart of a Gipsy community in Romania, examine sex addiction in Lithuania and explore some Celtic fables.

As for the 12 Development angels, who also come from various locations this year, from Brazil to Ukraine and from Ireland to Latvia, the selection includes creative producers, development executives and other film professionals aiming to become script consultants. They will be coached in their approach to story editing, working side by side with the tutors, as well as receiving dedicated training.

Supported by the Creative Europe – MEDIA programme of the European Union, Less Is More is run by Le Groupe Ouest (France), and was developed with Control N (Romania), the Vlaams Audiovisueel Fonds – VAF (Belgium), the Krakow Festival Office – KBF (Poland) and the Transilvania International Film Festival – TIFF (Romania), in partnership with the Lithuanian Film Centre – LKC and the Norwegian Film Institute – NFI, as well as the Brittany region and Screen Scotland.
