In 2013, the Israeli film Big Bad Wolves, helmed by duo Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado, was victorious at the Sitges Film Festival (as well as many other international gatherings), where it scooped the Best Director Award. A short while later, the legend that is Quentin Tarantino included this title among his favourites from that year. Now, if one were to take a stroll around the spectacular province of Cádiz, one may well stumble upon the cast and crew of Lobo feroz [+see also:

, a peculiar reimagining of the aforementioned hit, being helmed by Uruguay’s Gustavo Hernández. This filmmaker has already made forays into the fantastic genre with his previous films: The Silent House (which even got the Hollywood remake treatment), Local God and You Shall Not Sleep [+see also:

Lobo Feroz is a loose, revitalised adaptation of Big Bad Wolves. There were many changes that we made when you compare it to the original, given that we added new characters, plot strands and locations, and we introduced and fleshed out new themes teetering between dark comedy and police thriller. The film questions one’s principles, human behaviour and how ambiguous it can be,” the director explained to Cineuropa. “I’m very happy to be able to work with a dream Spanish cast, where everyone demonstrates their enormous talent and commitment in every scene and through every single detail.”

Because the fact is that Hernández is working with a troupe of actors comprising Adriana Ugarte, Antonio Dechent, Javier Gutiérrez, Rubén Ochandiano, Manu Vega and Madrid-based Colombian thesp Juana Acosta, all ready to be scared senseless alongside the director. The shoot, which has established the town of San Fernando as its base of operations, is currently taking place on location in San Fernando, Barbate, Vejer de la Frontera, Chiclana, Sancti Petri and the city of Cádiz.

The screenplay for the movie – written by Juan Manuel Foode Roma and Conchi del Río Merino – follows a police officer on the fringes of the law and a woman seeking revenge. Their paths cross, as they are obsessed with discovering the identity of the murderer behind a string of brutal crimes involving various girls. They are both willing to do whatever it takes to secure a confession, even though they will have to take the law into their own hands in order to do so. At the same time, a model detective will do his utmost to avoid irreparable errors being made and to ensure that this desperate search for the truth does not transform into the fiercest of wolves.

Lobo feroz is a production by Bowfinger International Pictures and Lobo Feroz AIE, in co-production with Mother Superior, Esto También Pasará (which also recently shot The House of Snails in Andalusia – see the news) and Basque Film. The shoot boasts backing from the Cádiz provincial government. Buenos Aires-based sales agent Film Sharks will oversee the international sales. The film has secured support from the ICAA and also sees the involvement of Netflix, which will air it after its Spanish theatrical release, courtesy of Filmax.
